The Town of Okotoks describes the community as being about 15 minutes from south Calgary, making it a popular option for people who want access to Calgary while living outside the city.
That sounds wonderfully simple.
But don't plan your life around a perfect 15-minute drive.
Your actual commute will depend on where you live in Okotoks, where you work in Calgary, what time you travel and what traffic looks like that day.
If you're commuting five days a week, do a test run before buying.
Try your commute at the actual time you'd normally leave home.
Because a Saturday morning drive and a Tuesday morning commute are two very different animals.
You'll Want to Choose Your Neighbourhood Carefully
One of the biggest advantages of moving to Okotoks is the variety of communities.
You can find established neighbourhoods with mature trees and larger lots, newer developments with modern homes and amenities, and areas that offer quick access to parks, pathways, schools and shopping.
Don't choose a neighbourhood simply because you found a house you love.
Think about your daily routine.
Where will you drive?
Where will the kids go to school?
How far are you from groceries?
How easy is it to get onto major roads?

Understand the Property Taxes
This is one Calgary-to-Okotoks detail buyers should research before making the move.
Property taxes aren't simply about the purchase price of your home.
They're based on the property's assessment and the applicable tax rates.
For 2026, the Town of Okotoks approved a 4% municipal property tax increase. The Town also reported that more than 64% of the increase in property tax bills was attributable to the provincial education tax rather than the Town's municipal increase.
For an average Okotoks home assessed at $729,500, the Town estimated an approximately $101 annual municipal increase for 2026, while the provincial education portion increased by approximately $289.
The lesson?
Don't compare homes based on purchase price alone.
Look at the property's actual assessment and tax bill when you're comparing your Calgary options with homes in Okotoks.
Your Utility Bill Will Look a Little Different
When you move to Okotoks, you'll also be dealing with the Town's utility system.
The municipal utility bill includes water, sewer, storm sewer, garbage, compost and recycling, and bills are issued every two months.
When purchasing a home, you'll need to set up your Town account for taxes, water and waste collection.
The Town recommends providing at least five working days' notice when setting up or cancelling services.
It's not complicated.
It's just one of those little administrative things that is much easier when you know about it before moving day instead of while surrounded by 37 boxes labelled “MISC.”
Schools Matter—Even If You Don't Have Kids Yet
If you're moving because you're starting or growing a family, school location may be one of your biggest considerations.
But even if children aren't currently part of your household, schools can still be something to consider when evaluating a property for future resale.
The Town of Okotoks provides a local school directory covering public, private and Catholic schools serving the community.
When you're looking at homes, don't just ask:
“How nice is the house?”
Also ask:
“How does this location work for our daily life?”
A five-minute difference in your morning routine can become very important when repeated approximately 1,247 times.
Okay, maybe not exactly 1,247.
But you get the point.
What About Getting Around Without a Car?
This is an important difference for some Calgary buyers.
Okotoks has its own transit system, including on-demand service and fixed-route service.
The Town launched its fixed-route service in September 2025, with two routes operating during weekday peak hours. On-demand service remains available, including weekends and holidays.
However, if your lifestyle in Calgary revolves around extensive public transit, don't assume Okotoks will work exactly the same way.
Look at your actual daily trips.
Work.
School.
Shopping.
Sports.
Appointments.
Friends.
Restaurants.
Everything.
Then see how easily you can make those trips from the neighbourhood you're considering.
Don't Forget the Lifestyle Difference
This might be the biggest reason people move from Calgary to Okotoks.
Okotoks offers a smaller-community environment while still being close to Calgary.
The Town highlights its parks, pathways, recreation facilities, cultural activities and year-round community events as part of what residents can enjoy locally.
Instead of driving into Calgary for every activity, you may find that more of your day-to-day life happens right in Okotoks.
For some people, that's exactly what they're looking for.
For others, the change can take some getting used to.
If you love being five minutes from every Calgary restaurant, concert, shopping centre and sporting event, you may occasionally find yourself saying:
“Okay… why did I move here again?”
Usually right after driving back from Calgary at 10:30 p.m.

One of the biggest mistakes Calgary buyers can make when moving to Okotoks is focusing entirely on the house.
Yes, you may get more space.
