September in Alberta is basically Alberta saying, “Summer's over. Figure it out.”
The days are still warm, the evenings are getting cooler, the leaves are starting to change, and suddenly everyone is trying to squeeze in one last outdoor adventure before the winter jackets make their annual comeback.

In Okotoks, several Town facilities have modified hours on Labour Day. The Okotoks Recreation Centre will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., while the Municipal Centre, Okotoks Art Gallery and Okotoks Museum and Archives will be closed.
So plan accordingly.
Because nothing says “relaxing long weekend” quite like showing up somewhere at 10:02 a.m. and discovering it closed.
Take a Walk Along the Sheep River
September is arguably one of the best times to explore the pathways around Okotoks.
The summer heat is easing off, the fall colours are starting to show up, and the Sheep River Valley is looking pretty spectacular.
You can walk, run, cycle or simply take the dog out for a stroll and pretend you're being productive.
The town has an extensive pathway network, including routes through the Sheep River Valley and Cimarron area.
For an easy local outing, check out the Heritage Trail around the river valley and downtown.
Visit the Okotoks Erratic
If you've lived in Okotoks for five minutes, you've probably heard someone say, “Have you seen Big Rock?”
The Okotoks Erratic is one of the area's most recognizable landmarks and makes for an easy September stop when you're looking for something outdoors that doesn't require packing half your house.

It's also a pretty good place to bring visitors who are wondering what makes the Foothills around Okotoks so interesting.
Spoiler: giant rocks carried here by glaciers are a pretty good conversation starter.
Explore Downtown Okotoks
September is a great excuse to spend an afternoon wandering around downtown.
Browse the local shops, grab something to eat or drink, take a walk through the river valley and check out the local arts and heritage scene.
Okotoks Art Gallery offers free admission and rotating exhibitions, while Okotoks Museum and Archives provides a look at the community's history.
Basically, you can spend an afternoon in Olde Towne without needing a detailed itinerary.
Which is important because sometimes the best plan is “let's see where we end up.”
Check Out the Okotoks Night Market
On Friday, September 11, the Okotoks Night Market returns to 15 Riverside Drive beside the library from 5–9 p.m.
It's a great opportunity to support local vendors, grab some food and enjoy the community atmosphere.
And yes, you are absolutely allowed to say you're “just looking” before walking away with three things you didn't know existed 20 minutes earlier.
Enchanted Okotoks
On Saturday, September 12, Enchanted Okotoks takes place at 50 McRae Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
If you're looking for something family-friendly, this is one to put on the calendar.
Watch Some BMX Racing
Also on September 12–13, Okotoks hosts the Provincial Finals & Alberta BMX Championship at the Okotoks BMX Track.
Saturday racing starts at noon, with Sunday's competition beginning at 10 a.m. Spectator admission is free.
Even if BMX isn't normally your thing, it's worth checking out.
It's fast, loud and considerably more exciting than watching someone else organize their garage.
Get Outside Before Alberta Changes Its Mind
September is also a great time for a day trip into the Foothills.
Head toward Sheep River Provincial Park, explore the trails, pack a picnic and enjoy the scenery while temperatures are still comfortable.

Just remember: Alberta weather has no interest in your plans.

One of the best things about living in Okotoks is that you don't always need to leave town to have a great weekend.
You can grab coffee, walk the river, browse downtown, check out an event, visit a local park and be home before dinner.
And throughout September, the Town's community calendar is packed with activities, including the Okotoks Night Market, Enchanted Okotoks, BMX championships, Nature Fridays, library events and more.
So before you start planning your winter escape, take advantage of what's right outside your front door.
