September Has Arrived. Your Lawn Has Been Warned.
September in Okotoks is that awkward month where summer refuses to leave quietly, fall starts moving in without an invitation, and homeowners suddenly realize there are approximately 47 things they meant to do around the house before winter.
The good news? You still have time.
September is one of the best months to enjoy Okotoks before the weather turns properly Alberta. The evenings get cooler, the leaves start changing, kids are back to school, and the town's calendar is still packed with ways to get out and enjoy the community.
And if you're a homeowner, September is also your annual reminder that winter is coming. No dragons. No zombies. Just snow, frozen hoses and the occasional furnace that decides October 31 is an excellent time to retire.
So here's your September weekend guide for Okotoks homeowners—part local bucket list, part fall home-maintenance reality check.
Get Outside Before Your Patio Becomes Decorative
If the forecast cooperates, get outside.
Okotoks has plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Sheep River Valley and local pathways before the weather turns cold. The Sheep River Valley trail system offers a great way to walk, cycle or simply get outside and enjoy the scenery. The community's river valley, parks and pathways are a big part of what makes living in Okotoks feel different from simply living somewhere with houses.
September is also a great time to explore the town on foot. Grab a coffee, wander downtown, check out local shops and take the scenic route home.
Because once winter arrives, “let's go for a nice walk” suddenly becomes “who has the shortest route to the car?”
Check Out What's Happening Around Town
Okotoks doesn't shut down just because summer is over.
The Town of Okotoks' September event calendar includes a variety of community activities throughout the month. Early September features events such as Nature Fridays, Thursday Nights @ the Plaza, the Okotoks Night Market and Enchanted Okotoks.
Later in September, the community calendar includes events such as the Alberta BMX Championship, the Okotoks Food Bank community food drive and activities at the Okotoks Public Library.
That's one of the underrated benefits of living here. You don't always need to drive into Calgary to find something happening.
Sometimes the best weekend plan is right down the road.
Have One Last Great Backyard Weekend
Before you pack away the patio furniture, squeeze in one more backyard gathering.
Invite the neighbours over. Fire up the barbecue. Have friends around. Let the kids run around. Enjoy the patio while you still can.
September can deliver some of the nicest evenings of the year in Okotoks.
And yes, someone will inevitably say, “We should do this more often.”
Then everyone will disappear until next summer.
Classic.
But First: Inspect Your Deck and Fence
While you're outside enjoying your backyard, take five minutes to actually look at it.
Check your deck boards, stairs, railings and fence for signs of damage. Look for loose boards, damaged fasteners, peeling finishes or areas where moisture has started doing its thing.
You don't need to turn into a structural engineer.
Just look around.
Small repairs are generally much easier to deal with before winter arrives than after a few months of freezing temperatures, snow and moisture have had their way with everything.
Your Furnace Deserves Some Attention
September is also the perfect time to think about your furnace.
Before you need it every day, replace or check your furnace filter, make sure vents aren't blocked and consider booking routine maintenance if your system is due for service.
And test your thermostat.
This is not the month to discover that your furnace has developed an artistic interpretation of the number “21.”
If your heating system is older or you've noticed strange noises, inconsistent temperatures or other problems, deal with them before the first serious cold snap.
Your future January self will thank you.
Possibly with a heated blanket.
Clean Out the Gutters Before They Become Waterfalls
September is also a great time to inspect your eavestroughs and downspouts.
Leaves, dirt and debris can build up quickly once autumn gets going. Make sure water can flow properly through the system and that downspouts direct water away from your foundation.
This is one of those glamorous homeowner responsibilities nobody puts on Instagram.
But your foundation doesn't care about Instagram.
It cares where the water goes.
Get Your Outdoor Plumbing Ready
Before temperatures drop, disconnect garden hoses and make sure exterior taps are properly shut off and drained according to your home's setup.
If you have a sprinkler system, make sure it is prepared for winter as recommended for your particular system.
A little preparation now can help prevent a much more annoying—and potentially expensive—problem later.
Because “I forgot to winterize it” is not exactly the kind of story you want to tell your plumber.
Don't Forget the Windows and Doors
Take a quick walk around the house and check your exterior doors and windows.
Look for obvious drafts, damaged weatherstripping or gaps around frames.
You don't necessarily need to launch into a full renovation project. Sometimes a small repair or replacement can make a noticeable difference in comfort.
And if your heating bill has been making you question every life decision you've ever made, improving air sealing is worth investigating.
September Is Also a Good Time to Look at Your Home With Fresh Eyes
Here's another September homeowner exercise: walk around your property as if you're seeing it for the first time.
What looks tired?
What needs fixing?
What have you been ignoring?
That last one is usually the most productive question.
If you're planning to stay in your Okotoks home for years, this is simply good maintenance.
But if you're considering selling sometime in the next year, September is also a great time to start planning. You don't need to renovate everything. In fact, you probably shouldn't.
Instead, identify the improvements that actually make sense for your home, neighbourhood and likely buyer.
A fresh coat of paint might make sense.
Fixing that broken railing definitely makes sense.
Spending $40,000 on a renovation because you saw a home makeover show at 11 p.m. is a different conversation.
Take a Look Around Your Okotoks Neighbourhood
September is also a great month to remember why people choose Okotoks in the first place.
Take a walk around your neighbourhood. Check out the parks. Explore the pathways. Visit local businesses. Say hello to the neighbours.
Whether you're living in Cimarron, D'Arcy Ranch, Drake Landing, Crystal Shores, Air Ranch, MountainView, Wedderburn, Sheep River or one of Okotoks' established communities, each area has its own personality.
And that's important when you're buying real estate.
A house is four walls, a roof and a mortgage.
A neighbourhood is where you actually live.
The September Homeowner Challenge
Here's my challenge for you this weekend:
Do one fun thing in Okotoks and three things around your house.
Go for a walk. Visit a local event. Grab dinner downtown.
Then clean the gutters, check the furnace filter and inspect your exterior.
Boom.
You've officially earned the right to spend the rest of the weekend doing absolutely nothing.
That's the beauty of September in Okotoks.
Enjoy the community while the weather is still cooperating, take care of the little things around the house, and get yourself ready for another Alberta winter.
Because winter is coming.
And unlike in the movies, nobody is coming to save your garden hose.
